Social Justice & Social Identity

This 2.5 hour session will educate and engage participants on core concepts of DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) and Social Justice, using a social identity framework to better synthesize these complex and nuanced topics. This session is open to anyone who wants to learn more about these topics.

This session will cover:

  • Key Terms & Definitions
  • Social Identity Framework
  • Dominant & Counter Narratives
  • How these ideas apply to work spaces and relationships
  • Resources and next steps for continuing this conversation

This session is open to anyone within an organization, regardless of role or function. The session will be broadly applied to the “at work” context, with no industry or organizational specificity.

Allyship & Bystander Intervention

This 2.5 hour session will build upon the foundation of Social Identity and explore how we show up as “Allies” in our work spaces and relationships. Our expert facilitators will step through strategies and tactics for intervening and interrupting oppressive behavior, as well as resources and tools for engaging in the lifelong process of allyship. This session is open to anyone who wants to learn more about these topics. Participants should come to the session with a working understanding of their own social identities (participation in the SJ & SI At Work session is highly recommended).

  • Resources and next steps for showing up as an Ally in your organization

Facilitation Team

Noor Ali, The Nova Collective

Noor Ali

Noor Ali (she, her, hers) holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Loyola University in Chicago and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work. She most recently served as the Assistant Director for Social Justice Education at Northwestern University, and is a group dialogue moderator with expertise leading conversations on race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, and sexual orientation.

Robert Brown

Robert Brown (he, him, his) serves as the Director of Social Justice Education at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, where he leads several curricular and co-curricular social justice education initiatives. Robert is currently pursuing a PhD in Higher Education Leadership at Colorado State University and has presented and facilitated regionally and nationally on topics related to social justice education, racial justice, inclusive pedagogy, identity-conscious supervision, men & masculinities, and civic engagement.
